Importance of Internal Bearing Clearance

Internal Bearing Clearance is defined as the total distance either the inner or outer ring can be moved when the other ring is fixed. If it moves in the radial direction it is called radial clearance and if it moves in the axial direction it is called axial clearance.

Bearing performance depends on internal clearance. Inappropriate clearance can result in short rolling fatigue life and generation of heat, noise and vibration. In measuring internal clearance, a specified load is generally applied in order to obtain stable measurement values.

Selection of Internal Bearing Clearance

  • The term ‘residual clearance’ is defined as the original clearance decreased owing to the expansion and contraction of a raceaway when the bearing is mounted on the shaft and housing.

  • The term ‘effective clearance’ is defined as the residual clearance decreased owing to dimensional change arising from temperature differentials within the bearing.

  • The term ‘operating clearance’ is defined as the internal clearance present while a bearing mounted in a machine is rotating under a certain load.

It is important to take specific operating conditions into consideration and select a clearance suitable as per the conditions. For instance, where high rigidity is required or when noise must be minimized, the operating clearance must be reduced etc. And when a high operating temperature is required, the operating clearance must be increased.

Bearings must have the appropriate operating clearance to operate satisfactorily. In most cases, bearings require a certain degree of clearance. However, in some cases, they may require preload. I.e. negative clearance

As a general rule:

  • Ball Bearings should have an operating clearance that is virtually zero.
  • Cylindrical, needle and spherical bearings typically require at least a small operational clearance.
  • Tapered roller and angular contact ball bearings should have a small operational clearance, except in applications where a high degree of stiffness or positional control is required, in which case they can be mounted with a degree of preload.

Selecting internal clearance and selecting preload, describe the influencing factors that you must consider and provide the methods by which you can calculate the initial clearance needed to achieve the degree of operational clearance/ preload required by your application.
