How to Determine if your Roller Bearings are Worn?

Roller Bearings are crucial components of bearings. If they are damaged, other machine parts or products they produce can be of bad quality. Like ball bearings, roller bearings are designed to carry loads and minimise friction. It's common for roller bearings to experience abrasion over time as they require replacements or repairs.

What are the most common types of Roller Bearing Damage?

More than a billion bearings are manufactured every year, most of which last longer than the equipment in which they are installed. Out of which a small percentage are replaced before failure for preventive measures. Here are common reasons for roller bearing damage:

  • Deformations - Roller Bearing deformations can occur in several ways. Excess heat can cause metal flow, which can result in rib face deformations in the bearing cone. Deformation can cause rollers to skew, leading to complete bearing lockup.
  • Spalling - This refers to damage occurring on the metal surface. Inclusion spalling arises from oxides or other hard inclusions within the bearing's steel. Point surface spalling happens when a raised surface or debris surpasses the thickness of the bearing's lubrication film.
  • Handling Damage - Damage caused by rough transport or installation often exhibits as denting - raised metal due to contact with roller edges.
  • Cage Damage - When bearings are dropped or installed incorrectly, they frequently suffer from cage damage. This can cause rollers to skew or bind, while also obstructing the cage ring during operation or installation.
  • Preload/ Overload Damage - Excessive bearing preload or overload has the potential to cause damage to roller bearings through various mechanisms. Tight preload settings may result in cone bore contraction, while heavy loads can lead to full race width fatigue spalling due to the creation of a lubricant layer and high temperatures.

When should you replace your roller bearings?

Determining the right time to replace your roller bearing can be challenging, as the duration between initial damage and complete failure can vary greatly. High-speed bearings can fail within seconds, while low-speed bearings may take months to degrade entirely.

Early detection of bearing damage is crucial to replace it before bearing failure, which can potentially harm the machine and other components. Recognising early signs of damage enables timely replacement during routine maintenance, preventing cost and unexpected downtime due to bearing failure. Inspectors should vigilantly monitor machines for abnormal noise, vibration and temperature, addressing the underlying causes to prevent further damage.
