How to Correctly Mount and Dismount Bearings

Mounting and Dismounting of Bearings is an essential procedure that involves specific tools and techniques needed to correctly install and remove bearings.

Proper mounting of bearings is essential. Using the wrong techniques can significantly reduce your bearing’s service life, leading to bearing damage and failure, costing more time and money through unplanned downtime and replacing the bearing.

How to Mount Bearings correctly?

Mounting a bearing is a critical stage of the bearing life cycle. Using specialized tools maximises the chances of success and the bearing’s service life. The following process can be followed to mount bearings correctly.

  • Clean the Shaft and Housing - Before mounting a bearing, clean the shaft and housing with a solvent and clean cloth.
  • Apply Lubricant - Apply a thin layer of lubricant to the shaft and housing, ensuring the lubricant is evenly distributed.
  • Check Fit - Verify that the bearing and shaft/housing are the correct fit by measuring the inner and outer diameters of the bearing and the shaft/housing. Check the tolerance value against specifications.
  • Install Bearing - Position the bearing onto the shaft or in the housing, ensuring it is seated perfectly. Avoid hammering the bearing onto the shaft/ housing.
  • Apply Axial Load - Apply a slight axial force to the bearing to ensure it is properly seated.
  • Secure Bearing - Secure the bearing by tightening the locking device as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

How to Dismount Bearings correctly?

Every bearing has a service life that eventually comes to an end and the bearing needs to be replaced. If the bearing is not removed correctly, it could damage the housing, shaft or machinery, creating even more cost. The following process can be followed to dismount the bearings correctly.

  • Prepare Tools - Before dismounting the bearing, ensure you have the appropriate tools such as a puller or press.
  • Remove Locking Device - Take out any securing devices such as snap rings, locking nuts and set screws that secure the bearing in its position.
  • Apply Pulling Force - Apply pulling force using a suitable puller designed for the specific size and type of bearing to safely remove it.
  • Inspect Bearing - Examine the bearings thoroughly for indications of wear and damage, focusing on the raceway, rolling elements and cage to detect  signs of deterioration or wear.
  • Clean Shaft and Housing - Thoroughly clean the shaft and housing using a solvent and a clean cloth to ensure they are free from contaminants and debris.
  • Install New Bearing - Install a new bearing following the steps of bearing mounting.

It is crucial to follow these simple instructions and safety guidelines when mounting and dismounting bearings to prevent damage to the bearing.
